On September 28, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit areas outside the city of Palu on Sulawesi island in Indonesia. The earthquake also triggered a tsunami with waves as high as 6 meters. We are all deeply saddened and concerned to see the destruction and loss of life caused by these tragic events. As of Wednesday morning, the death toll had climbed to over 1,400 people, with an additional 70,000 displaced from homes, and thousands more injured. Food, water, fuel, and medicine has been slow to reach the hardest-hit areas, with many roads broken and split open.
The entire PayPal community is thinking of the people in affected areas and we are deeply committed to assisting those in need. Together with PayPal Giving Fund we have launched a disaster relief campaign for our customers globally. Further, in the U.K., we’ve launched an appeal for the Disasters Emergency Committee’s 14 leading UK aid organizations who are mobilizing support to the region.
Your donations made through these campaigns will help organizations that are providing emergency shelters, medical supplies, food, and other forms of support to those in need. To ensure that 100% of your contribution goes toward relief efforts, PayPal will cover the costs associated with your donation. Through the PayPal Gives program, PayPal will match donations made by PayPal employees, under the terms of the program.
With any natural disaster of this magnitude, the need for aid will be vast and recovery will be long. In partnership with agencies that are providing relief on the ground, we know we can help to make a difference in supporting those affected during this difficult time.
When Hurricane Florence hit the southern east coast in the U.S. just last month, your generosity made a profound difference. And last year, when Irma, Harvey and Maria damaged parts of the United States and Caribbean, and earthquakes devastated Mexico, the PayPal community came together in a powerful way. We’re hoping you will, once again, join us in helping the people and communities impacted by this latest natural disaster. We’re extremely grateful to anyone who is able to help.
